You want the King of Industrial Drilling Machines, so you scour the aftermarket for a Deka Drill.

Your friend’s cousin’s uncle is a tool and die guy and will sell you one for a song, IF you spring it from their facility.

With the help of U-Haul, you accomplish that and now have the drill press sitting in the corner of your shop.

Now what?

This blog covers basic setup and maintenance on a legacy Deka Drill and where to find replacement parts, if needed.

Deka Drill Overview

The Deka Drill is a multi-functional machine capable of handling drilling, tapping, chamfering, counterboring and similar tasks.

With various models featuring motors from 3 to 15 horsepower and spindle speeds ranging from 166 to 3124 RPM, the machine is well-suited for a variety of applications.

Used Deka Drill Press Setup

As you’re setting up a used Deka Drill, it’s important to take the necessary steps to ensure it operates efficiently and safely.

Start by thoroughly inspecting your used machine for any signs of damage or missing components from prior usage or transportation.

When deciding where to place the machine in your shop, choose a solid and level area that can support its weight.

Proper lighting and sufficient room for operation are key to maximizing productivity. It’s also recommended to move the machine to its final location before removing it from the shipping skid or whatever you used to steady it during transit.

Before disposing of the packaging materials, make sure no small parts are left behind. Use a safe, non-toxic solvent to clean any old grease or residue from machined surfaces and apply oil to unpainted areas to prevent rust.

After the machine is positioned, ensure it is leveled correctly, especially if you plan to use a coolant system.

A precision level should be used to check both across and along the table slots. Adjust the screws in the machine’s base to ensure the weight is evenly distributed.

Get Familiar With Key Deka Drill Machine Features

You are familiar with Deka as a quality drill press machine, but what really makes it special?

A legacy Deka Drill is designed for flexibility and can be outfitted with adjustable spindles, cluster boxes and various work-holding fixtures.

Its spindles connect via double universal joints, allowing for easy positioning and secure attachment to the gearbox without the need for loose shafts or joints. This is a distinctive feature of the Deka Drill that sets it apart from other industrial drilling machines.

The machine’s work table moves vertically through hydraulic power, controlled by a separate unit with its own motor, pump and reservoir.

Electrical and hydraulic controls are conveniently located for easy access. The coolant system, which has its own motor and controls, is also straightforward to operate.

Lubricating Instructions for Deka Drill Press

Now it’s time to use the machine, but you need to lubricate its creaky joints first!

Here’s where to start:

Lubrication Frequency

  • Regular lubrication is crucial for optimal performance and longevity of the Deka Drill press.
  • Daily checks and lubrication are recommended to prevent wear and tear.

Lubricants

  • Use high-quality lubricants such as the Mobil DTE-26 or equivalent oil.
  • Ensure that the lubricant is suitable for the specific components being serviced.

Lubrication Points

  • Identify all key lubrication points on the drill press, including bearings, gears and moving parts.
  • Pay special attention to the gear train, which may require a specific volume of lubricant (e.g. six gallons for geared models).

Inspection

  • Regularly inspect lubrication points for signs of leakage or insufficient lubrication.
  • Look for any unusual noises or performance issues that could spell trouble.

Maintenance Schedule

  • Establish a maintenance schedule that includes monthly checks for gear cases and hydraulic motor bearings.
  • Repack universal joint drives every four hours of operation to ensure they remain well-lubricated.

Cleaning

  • Before applying new lubricant, clean any old grease or oil from the lubrication points to prevent contamination.
  • Use appropriate cleaning tools and methods to maintain the integrity of the machine.

Documentation

  • Keep a log of lubrication activities, including dates and types of lubricants used, to track maintenance history.

By following these detailed lubrication instructions, you will be certain your trusty Deka Drill will operate efficiently and safely.
