Mill Terminology Explained

Even if you are an experienced machinist or machine tool instructor, it’s helpful to know the “ingredients in your food.”

Stay nourished! Here are the essential parts of a vertical mill and what they do:

  • The Saddle is a sliding casting mounted on a milling machine’s knee. It provides horizontal movement to the worktable. The worktable can be equipped with a swivel vise that can be rotated and machined at any angle.

  • Power Feeds are motorized units that can be installed on the mill’s axes to automate the feed movement. They provide consistent and controlled feed rates, making the machining process more efficient and reducing operator fatigue.

  • The Knee is a rigid casting that is mounted on the column. It provides vertical movement to the worktable and supports the saddle.

The food is ready. The table has been set. Now eat! Get in touch for pricing on our LVM models.

Get Vertical Knee Mill Accessories to Tackle Any Job Requirement

Everyone knows the lures in the tackle box make the fisherman. The same is true for machinists.

Machine tool accessories decide whether a job is just done or done with exacting quality and precision.

Here’s a quick summary of critical accessories that LeBlond can supply for any mill:

  • Rotary Tables enable the machining of cylindrical or curved surfaces. These tables can be mounted on the mill’s worktable and allow for the rotation of the workpiece, providing additional axes of movement.
  • Dividing Heads for indexing and dividing workpieces to perform tasks such as cutting gears or machining complex shapes. They can be attached to the mill’s spindle and provide precise rotational movement for accurate machining operations.
  • Collet Sets to hold and secure cutting tools in the mill’s spindle. A variety of collet sets with different sizes and configurations are available to accommodate various tool shank diameters.
  • Digital Readouts (DRO) are electronic devices that provide precise measurement readings of the mill’s axes. They can be retrofitted to LeBlond vertical mills and offer improved accuracy and ease of use, allowing operators to monitor and control the machining process more effectively.
  • Tool Holders and Tooling such as end mill holders, collet chucks and drill chucks are used to secure cutting tools in the mill’s spindle. Additionally, a wide range of tooling options, such as end mills, drills, reamers and boring bars are available for different milling operations.

Get Service on Your LeBlond Mill

Rest assured if you buy a vertical mill from LeBlond and problems arise, you can get the equipment serviced quickly to prevent machine downtime and loss of productivity.

The LVM Series Requires Little Maintenance

Our mills are equipped with automatic oiler ports on the side and bed that are on a set timer with an alarm system when lubrication is too drastically depleted.

As long as you’re keeping these oilers full and preventing metal chips from getting in the ways, you’ll rarely have issues with the equipment.

If you do have issues, our service team is available by phone or in person to keep your mill running smoothly.

Get Key Features Installed

LeBlond can install key features like power feed or the air power drawbar at our facility or in person on your shop floor.

Power Feed

The power feed allows automated machining and assists with longer workpieces. If you’re cutting something straight across, you can turn on the power feed, set the variable speed knob and move away from the mill, watching it cut on its own.

Air Power Drawbar

The air power drawbar is used for holding your end mill. With a manual one, you’re probably looking at anywhere from five to 10 minutes of changing your tool. With the air power drawbar, you’re ready to go in 30 seconds.

With reliable service and parts support available for your LeBlond vertical knee mill, you have peace of mind with the maintenance of your equipment.

Michael Drapac

Needed troubleshooting and parts for used lathe made by LeBlond. The parts and service guys were a great help walking me through the steps to figure out what failed and what parts I needed to get my lathe back up and running. Highly recommend!

Steven Henryy

Ordered a gear rack for my lathe which really surprised me that LeBlond had it in stock. When received, it was the wrong rack. Once they received the incorrect part, they shipped me the correct gear rack for my lathe and I now have a proper operating lathe.

FAQs

What is a vertical mill?

A vertical mill is a machine tool that utilizes a vertically oriented spindle to remove material from a workpiece by cutting or drilling, typically used for precision milling operations.

What is the difference between a horizontal and a vertical mill?

A horizontal mill has a horizontally oriented spindle while a vertical mill has a vertically oriented spindle.

Which is better: a vertical or horizontal milling machine?

The choice between a vertical or horizontal milling machine depends on the specific application and desired outcome. Vertical mills are typically better suited for precision work and tasks that require working with smaller, delicate pieces while horizontal mills are often preferred for larger, heavy-duty machining operations.

What are the advantages of vertical milling?

Vertical milling offers advantages such as increased stability, easier chip evacuation and the ability to perform precise, intricate cuts due to the vertical orientation of the spindle and workpiece.
