<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Hey, guys, Chris Smith here with LeBlond. Well, to let you know, there&#8217;s some big things happening with LeBlond, and that is if you haven&#8217;t checked out our website lately, we&#8217;re offering now large lathes with large spindle bores. As you can see behind me, this isn&#8217;t the largest we can go. This is a 36 by 240. It has the six-inch spindle bore.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We can do six-inch, nine-inch, 10-inch, and 12-inch spindle bores. The swings we can go up to is all the way up to 70 inches of swing, and up to 400 inches of center distance as well. So if that is something you&#8217;ve been looking for, come check out our website, see what we can offer, and let us know what you want. The great thing about this machine, you have full control at the headstock, right here, and it is a low RPM machine at only 400 max RPM, all the way down to 4 RPM. Each one also comes equipped with a face plate, that it also has four jaws, that can also work a little bit like a four-jaw chuck with your working.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">And also, when you come to the apron, you also have full range of controls of the apron. For the bed being so long, instead of walking back and forth, you&#8217;ve got full range of control at your apron as well, with emergency stop, electric brake. The other nice feature with this thing being so long, having your hangers for your rods. The machine, if you see the hook back there, will actually pick up the supports and move them up and down the bed with the carriage itself, so you don&#8217;t have to do that anymore, and it&#8217;ll also drop them off in certain positions and pick it up. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">Hey guys. Christopher Smith here with LeBlond. Thanks for tuning in. Like I said in the last video, we were going to be talking about the drill press that we had come in, something kind of big, and here it is, it&#8217;s the radial arm drill press. This is a 13” by 49” for the customer that requested it. It was actually kind of an odd request for us. Everybody knows LeBlond for lathes. We were actually working with that customer for trying to get them a couple lathes with that project, wound up falling through and just saw them trying to see when the project might come live again. They said, &#8220;Hey, we&#8217;re looking for this radial arm drill press. Can you offer that?&#8221; And I said, &#8220;Hey, give me a couple of days. Let me see what I can find out.&#8221; And sure enough, yeah, we found some that are up to our specs that we really liked and presented to the customer and now they&#8217;re going in their hands.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I wish I had more time with it. It wound up coming in late. It was supposed to be to the customer before 2025, so I don&#8217;t have time to do a whole lot of showcasing on it for you. I wish I could, but this one is equipped with all your power feeds. Everything is power on this. Your up and down, your spindle control. Your locks are all automatic just with the push of a button to get everything locked for your rotating head, your arm. It&#8217;s a super heavy duty machine and really we are pretty excited about it. So if it&#8217;s something you guys are also in the market for, just don&#8217;t think of us as just Leblond for lathes.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">We&#8217;re a whole lot more than that with our mills, surface grinders, tool and cutter grinders and parts. Parts is a big part of our business. We can still get parts for your old LeBlond lathes all the way back to 1938 just about. So please, yeah, keep us in mind for everything and just, it doesn&#8217;t hurt to ask. We&#8217;re always willing to help out. So yeah, take a look at it. It&#8217;s a great looking machine. We&#8217;re excited to see where this can go for us. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">Guys, Chris Smith here. It&#8217;s been a while. November and December are really crazy for us, with everybody getting their end-of-the-year budget, and machines moving out the door like crazy. So we don&#8217;t really have a whole lot to show you. What we&#8217;re going to talk about today, is how we ship machines, our preferred method, if it&#8217;s going back overseas or out of the United States. So first we&#8217;ll talk about our preferred method, which is load and protect. What that means, is we put it into the trailer, we strap it down personally, the truck driver never touches it, a security wall goes up, and then a special tag goes on it. So it goes from our dock to your dock. Now, with that you do have to have a loading dock, or if it&#8217;s one of our smaller machines like our 1332 Educational Series Machines, are very popular with the schools or gunsmiths, we can put that in sideways and you can pallet-jacket to the back-end of the truck.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So right now, we&#8217;ve got this one going out to today, a heavy-duty RKL2560. It is going load and protect. So we just wrap it up like this. Every metal surface, like your bed weights and all that, we spray down with rust preventative oil, just to protect it. If there&#8217;s accessories, we build you an accessory crate. This way, nothing gets lost or damaged. So all your accessories will go inside here. We build them to hopefully fit everything, and then stuff it with some bubble wrap to hold everything from bouncing around.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So certainly if you don&#8217;t have a loading dock and we&#8217;ve got to ship flatbed, we do that as well. With that you&#8217;ll get a skeleton crate, which will look like this machine here, this crate. It would just be a skeleton crate, just to protect the machine. And what&#8217;s mainly to protect it from, is the tarps, because cause we&#8217;re going to have it tarped to protect it from the weather and elements, still sprayed down. So we can do that way for you, or hot shot, if you&#8217;re looking for a cheaper way to ship or whatnot. Then we collect, [inaudible 00:02:07] collect, like say it&#8217;s going from here in Cincinnati and going out to LA, it&#8217;s going to go through so many hubs that we are not really sure of, and who knows who&#8217;s moving it, if they know how to move heavy equipment without damaging it. This also just helps protect it, so they don&#8217;t run anything, any of the handles, apron, any of that stuff, or whatever the machine is, and then damage it.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Now if it&#8217;s leaving the United States, or it&#8217;s going back, or say we&#8217;re going even to Alaska, it&#8217;s going to go on a boat again. To protect it, we put it in a completely enclosed crate with special fumigated wood, because you need that to get it out of the States, like to Mexico and Canada, who we also sell to quite a bit. So it&#8217;ll be in a special fumigated crate just like this, where it&#8217;s protected, because that&#8217;s what government regulations want you to have. It&#8217;s also shrink-wrapped for a better seal, some, oh, what do they call those things, moisture-wicking bags to help keep the moisture out of the machine, is what we do there. But we can accommodate whatever the customer wants.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So yeah, like I said, we&#8217;ve been pretty busy. We haven&#8217;t really been able to get a whole lot to you the last couple months unfortunately. A couple things we&#8217;re working on here, last minute. We can go over here, show you what I&#8217;m working on, is, because we&#8217;re not just machines, we are, big part of [inaudible 00:03:41] LeBlond been around forever, and the parts keeping your LeBlonds going all the way back to 1938. Right now, I&#8217;ve been working on a two-speed tailstock for our customer. Trying to get that all together, and you see, it&#8217;s a big mess trying to get all the parts and everything and get it built and working the way it should up to our standards.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But again, we would like to thank you guys for taking the time out this year of 2024, and watching our videos, and being very supportive. And letting us help you with questions and even helping us with questions we have. We&#8217;ve got quite a bit of customers out there that are pretty knowledgeable, and if I&#8217;m having trouble with something, I know I can reach out to you. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">Hey guys, it&#8217;s Christopher Smith here with LeBlond. We&#8217;re going to talk to you today not about lathes. We&#8217;re going to be talking about the KO lee surface grinders that we also service and also sell as well. So what we&#8217;re starting off with here is a KO Lee, KB 6 0 5 5 CL spindle. We do a lot of rebuilds for these and it&#8217;s not just the 6 0 5 5 CL that we rebuilt. We rebuilt quite a few of &#8217;em and see I&#8217;ve got a folder here of just a few of &#8217;em that we do, but there&#8217;s probably about 20 or 30 of &#8217;em that we do for the KO Lee line as well and also our log book. So customer sent this one in and it has seen a lot of work. It&#8217;s probably one of the ones that&#8217;s probably in the worst shape that I have ever seen that I have not been able to get a part.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So we have got the customer to buy a new one and we&#8217;ll go over that. As you can see, this is the inside of the Quill assembly. This is your spindle, these are your bearings with your spacer. You can see this bearing is locked up and you can see the damage to it. There&#8217;s a lot of wear here on the arbor as well where your grinding wheel is going to sit. So here&#8217;s one of the lock nuts with the seal in it as well and you can see this was on the back end not even exposed to the coolant and got pretty damaged. And the reason why I&#8217;ve chosen to rebuild it is if you look here, I&#8217;ve seen blasted this. This was in pretty bad shape when it came in, but it is just, the wall is just too thin for me to get my wrench on that pulls these out.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You can see here&#8217;s a wrench that would go in there and it just keeps popping. I thought about taking a punch and going in there, but I&#8217;m worried about messing up the threads which would ultimately in turn damage the seal causing not to seal again when they started using cold sew. So this one is going to be going to the trash and we&#8217;re going to build a new one. And here&#8217;s what&#8217;s all involved inside the new ones. You got your housing here, which I&#8217;ll need to stamp up with the KBS 6 0 5 5 CL part number and then what we&#8217;ll also do, we&#8217;ll put a LeBron serial number, that way we can record it. If whoever comes in, I&#8217;ll know when it was shipped out for warranty purposes as well. Now I&#8217;ll tell you, you&#8217;ve got the canoe surface. Any or quill, it needs to be rebuilt with a rebuilt.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It&#8217;s generally just your nuts, seals and your bearings generally that we have to replace. A lot of times your spindle will be just fine. Your end caps can be reused. If they&#8217;re rusting dirty, we can clean those up, sandblast &#8217;em, solvent tank, get them all good and clean. Big thing you want to do with your bearings, these are high speed precision bearings and as you can see there&#8217;s no grease them as well. We take a syringe with high temp lithium grease and I will pack these all in and set it all in and test it. Now when it&#8217;s all together, the end result is going to be this right here, this is the KV S 8 0 5 5 cl. You can see nice and smooth, no sounds whatsoever as you turn it and I&#8217;ll go over showing you at the end after we get it built, how we test run these procedures for that these to look for and all that good stuff.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So let&#8217;s get started. Hey guys, so we&#8217;re here. I&#8217;ve got, while the bearing&#8217;s already done, I&#8217;ve already went ahead and stuck the other two and built the other side. Sure you know how I pack these bearings. Like I said, I just got this syringe that I keep filling up so that&#8217;s why it&#8217;s kind of messy. But I&#8217;m going to get it down in here and try to get this grease and don&#8217;t worry about the overflow because you want to get as much grease inside these as possible at the low line. These are running at 3,400 RPM and the high end you&#8217;re running at 7,450 RPM. So I&#8217;ll shoot the inside and then I&#8217;ll go ahead and shoot the other and was going to take my finger and just work it all around trying to get as much in as I possibly can and it&#8217;s going to be messy.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You might be thinking to yourself, Connolly, he&#8217;s wasting a lot. You take that, got my cup, wipe it off. You don&#8217;t want to have too much excess and you just wipe off with their weight. This grease is expensive. Now I&#8217;ve got it packed. I&#8217;m going to go ahead and roll it a couple times just to make sure it&#8217;s in there and it&#8217;s going to cause some of that that I packed to come out again as well. So I&#8217;m going to go ahead and work it in again. That way I know I&#8217;ve got maximum coverage that I can get.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Okay, so now I feel pretty good about this. Got my quill locked into the vice. Now further drawings, these bearings are directional and it took me a little bit of while to understand that but what can we show you here? So the skinny side goes down inside first and what I mean by the skinny side is the outer race here. If you see how kind of thin it is and you see this gap difference, but then I flipped this over this side, you can see this side of the race is a little bit thicker and that gap pain is wide so it&#8217;s going to go down in there like that with a thin going in.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">I will work that in,</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">They&#8217;ll wipe my fingers off and I&#8217;ve already got the nuts seal on the other side so it&#8217;s all kind of locked in. And now we&#8217;re just going to drive this down. Now to do that I have the special made sleeve I put on there this little slide over and I&#8217;m going to get a light wing tapping it. Next up are our spacers and there&#8217;s two of them with the groove and the groove is going to face towards the outside Before I put those in, just use a little bit of oil wild just to help these two on the running running. They&#8217;ll help keep it from getting hot. Those are on my W sleeve here. Drive it down, little down, you&#8217;ll hear the sound difference and it ain&#8217;t going to move anymore. Spacer lifting up that big deal actually slides in pretty easy And for our next bearing, and again you say it&#8217;s directional, got the fat side there, then side there, then we&#8217;ll be facing how</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Work that on good launch plunge,</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Set her down and seat it. Okay, now with that in place we go ahead and wipe off any of this excess grease on the spindle itself and the nut seal is going to go in and that&#8217;s what&#8217;s going to seal it and keep basically around and cooling. Keep the colon from getting inside, getting to the bearings and any other your dust debris from GR meat. We always put a little shim on and I&#8217;ll explain to you what that does here in a second. So start with a shim, go on and the next is the nut seal. Now for the nut seal we take blue thread locker. This is just the medium strength so you can get it off, but what it&#8217;s going to do, it&#8217;s going to seal up the threads so nothing can pass through and get down inside,</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Go on</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The excess. Now here&#8217;s where it gets a little bit crucial where you got to pay attention and not get carried away. So here to tighten this up and you don&#8217;t need to put any kind of torque or squeeze on it. I&#8217;m going to bring it down just to a touch like so. And that&#8217;s all you need. You can give it a spin feel that&#8217;s gliding real nice and easy and that&#8217;s all you need. And the thread locker is also going to help keep that from backing out as you&#8217;re running too as well as long as working as a seal. Now the reason for the shim, it&#8217;s got to give us a little bit of a guess when we put the cap on, the shims can actually hit on here and lift it up a bit so it&#8217;s not running metal to metal in here.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Cool. Yeah, that kind the worship of credit, right? That</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Your own just still a spinning freely. Flip it over. See we&#8217;ve already got the seals and the barrels and on this side. Got it.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">They are in a same town.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">These new seals are really good and tight. Long bit of encouragement.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Hi SM, we will</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Wipe out the access Lay Hammond ice and smooth. Now we&#8217;re going to take it over to the bench and we&#8217;ll show you how we set it up and test it. Hey guys. So we got the quill all back together and we are going to test it now so we make sure it&#8217;s good for the customer to use. So all over here I&#8217;ll show you how we test it. So we&#8217;ve got this quill holder that we have and I mounted it to the table of our mill. I&#8217;ve added a pulley on the end of the quill here that our belt will go in and run in. So what we&#8217;ll do, we&#8217;ll just slide this in here. So clamper down ta. Now we will get this up and running at 3000 RPM and we&#8217;ll run it for a half hour with a temperature and to make sure we don&#8217;t get overheated, we&#8217;d like to see you anywhere from 1 0 8 to one 11 is a good temperature. So we know we&#8217;re good to go. So grab my belt here, got my other pulley set up here on single and bitter stream contention, yield, hit. Now we&#8217;re up and running so you can see we&#8217;re only at 1600 RRP N. So we&#8217;ll bump that up.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Stomach temperature here,</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">You would tweak it on to fall,</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Start to fall for a half hour. And yeah, we&#8217;ll come back and we&#8217;ll check the temperature. But really that&#8217;s all that there is to this. Make sure it&#8217;s running good. Then we&#8217;ll also check the tap, make sure there is small movement. If we&#8217;re done, we&#8217;ll stamp up part number and should be ready to go for the customer. You&#8217;ve seen us do a lot of videos on the lathes, &#8217;cause that&#8217;s typically what LeBlond is known for, but these days LeBlond is known for a lot more. We also do mills, surface grinders, band saws tool and cutter grinders, and we want to showcase the mill a little bit. This here is our 9 by 48. It&#8217;s one of our most popular models that we sell, but we can do a whole bunch of other sizes, 10 by 50, 12 by 54, and they come in a couple of different variations where this one&#8217;s an electronic variable speed. We can do mechanical variable speed as well, and also belt drive.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">So some of the options with this, we have the Kurt vise that we offer so when you get a quote, you&#8217;ll see the Kurt vise in the quote. It&#8217;s a beautiful looking blue, I really like that. I feel like I should have a Ford truck painted in that color. Here is the guard that actually goes on the machine, so for your schools or just for safety, this is where this would go, but we got it off now, so you can see what I&#8217;m going to do here with the collet. Let me get out of the &#8230; right here so I can just get that out of the way.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Also on the quote, what you get are the R8 collet sets. So with this lathe, this mill, I&#8217;m sorry, also has is the air powered draw bar for your collets, which makes it quick and easy. Line up the key and just push a button [inaudible 00:01:27] and your tool is locked in ready to go. Same with letting it go. Comes with the tray. What I don&#8217;t have that we also have on the quote is a clamping kit. We just sold our last one in it, so I don&#8217;t have any in stock right now, they&#8217;re coming in. The other nice features about these are the power feeds. Got your power feed on your Y, reversible. With speed. Same with your Z. That comes on the control. And just stand here, this side a little bit, see it going up and down. And same for your X.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">All great functions. With safety stops that you can set on each one of the axes. Now this system, or this mill, we&#8217;ve installed a 3-axis Newall MNS800 system on. It&#8217;s a very versatile system. The NMS800 comes with a five-year warranty and has a lot of functions that the original DP700 that they had didn&#8217;t have. So it&#8217;s a great system, easy to read, easy to work, and your control arm controlling speed. With the electronic variable speed, got your RPM gauge here, easy to read, with a brake. Just a great system. Now it&#8217;s been one of our top sellers in the milling, on the milling side of our business.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Hey guys, Christopher Smith here. Going to talk to you today about some big things happening this fall for our promo. We are offering the Newall NMS800 for 25% off. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">The NMS800 with the mill functions. You can do both hole and PCD calculations, line hole, grid accuracy calculations, arc contouring, pocket, and island milling as well. The system we have on this mill right now is just a three-axis system, but we can do up to four, and also two axis if that&#8217;s what you&#8217;d like.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Also with it, inch/metric conversions, programmable memory and data, datums and tools and IP67 rating. So it&#8217;s fully submersible up to one meter. There&#8217;s no mechanical wear characteristics and no glass scales.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Newall sends you with the kit, a full package of bracketry to make installation absolutely an ease if you look here and see how we&#8217;ve got it all configured on this system, and you can see the scale&#8217;s completely enclosed. The rod itself is just full of ball bearings that the reader head reads, so you don&#8217;t have to worry about getting any scratches or nicks on it like you do with the glass scales. <p>Hey, guys. Christopher Smith with LeBlond here. We&#8217;re going to talk to you today about some parts and wear and tear stuff and where to be looking at. So as you can see, we&#8217;ve got a picture of our headstock. And this is just breakdown of 15 inch, and the 15s and the 19s are all pretty much the same. Even parts-wise, they&#8217;re pretty similar. But what we&#8217;re going to be looking at are the seals and what the markings are. So these X&#8217;s, here, you can see them pretty well, that&#8217;s where your seals are. They&#8217;re just set up here. And then down here you got a gasket for your spindle. So that&#8217;s some of the stuff that we&#8217;re going to be talking about for some of the furthest parts. Obviously you know all the bearings, you know the bearing symbols, all that. We carry all that stuff. We&#8217;re __ a grommet forward right now as well too. So it&#8217;s just some wear and tear stuff if you guys are in need of this stuff.</p>
<p>We&#8217;ll talk about these drive pins as well too for your brake. You want to check those periodically, maybe once a year. If your brake&#8217;s not working well, that&#8217;s going to set your plate that&#8217;s going to get pulled in by the magnet. And you want no more than 18000th distance between that plate and your brake, is the max that will allow the magnet to still keep on working. So the closer you get that, the better. So you might want to always check your pins just to make sure they&#8217;re good. If not, get a replacement for them. Wiper kits for your beds, for the tailstock of the carriage and all that, things to be looking out for it.</p>
<p>So now that I&#8217;ve gone over what those are, we&#8217;re going to go out the shop and I&#8217;ve got some parts sitting on a cart. We&#8217;re going to talk about a couple other things. Follow me out there. All right. All they are are just these little green over seal, metal on the outside casing. And this is both of them that go on that headstock. You&#8217;re going to see. Also, the gasket that I was talking about for your spindle on the back end. We also carry the one for the front. And the drive pins, the accessory pins. But one of the most single important things you can do for your machine, to keep it running fantastic, is changing the oil. We do recommend Mobil DTE-26 of the lightweight, non-detergent hydraulic oil. And if you can&#8217;t find the Mobil, most of your automotive stores like O&#8217;Reilly&#8217;s, AutoZone carry the brand Performance Plus and you want to get the AW-68.</p>
<p>Another good thing that could help out there is you can pick up magnets from your local hardware store, just like this one here. You want to drop that down in your headstock, make sure it makes it down to the bottom. And this is going to help pick up all the soot and the crud and hold it instead of it being circulated through your headstock or, for your servo shift guys, going through your servo shift and clogging it up and your filter. Just a great way to keep it clean. So yeah, that&#8217;s it for this ___. <h2 style="text-align: center;"><span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong>Quick Change Tool Post Video Transcription</strong></span></h2>
<p>Hey guys, Chris Smith here, Service Technician with LeBlond. We&#8217;re going to talk to you a little bit today about some of your tool post options with your RKL LeBlond lathe. Now every lathe comes standard with this four-way tool post, and it&#8217;s got 4 D 10th positions. Now the downfall to this is dependent on your tooling size. You have to get the right tooling size so that your bit is in the right place when you&#8217;re cutting. So you may have to build it up, or you may have to manufacture your own tooling, which a lot of companies out there do. Now, We&#8217;ll set that aside.</p>
<p>What is really nice, and what you&#8217;ll also receive with every LeBlond lathe quote, is a quote for a quick change tool post. Our standard is the Aloris tool post, there&#8217;s a couple of other brands out there as well. And if there&#8217;s another one that you would like, all you have to do is say so and we can get that to you. What makes this thing so nice is you don&#8217;t have to move your compound as much. The quick change, you can loosen it up and you can turn it and lock it in whatever position you want for your tooling. Also, what you&#8217;re given, then go ahead and lock it down. It&#8217;s just the versatility of changing up your tool. Just unlock it and you can drop right in another so you can go from facing right to threading or even boring. Now, it&#8217;s also really nice. They also send us a facing holder with also a V cut into it. So if you have round tooling, it allows for that round tooling to be held good and tight so it doesn&#8217;t slip on you with that little V-way cut into it.</p>
<p>You get four different style holders. You do have a boring holder as well. The other great feature about it is the fact that it doesn&#8217;t matter what size of tooling you have, you have an adjustment here for lining it up perfectly. So we&#8217;ll show you a bit about that. Lock that in, come into our tool, into our piece. Now the best way to do that, I&#8217;ve been taught as I use a small scale, you can bring it in, set it up and get your piece and you see that at an angle. What we&#8217;re trying to do is get that perfectly straight up and down.</p>
<p>So back off a touch and we&#8217;ll drop this down. Keep adjusting. There you go. You drop up and down. Take your lock nut, just lock it in. Now it&#8217;s nice. Your tooling is always going to be lined up and ready to go every time you take your holder out. And as long as you keep on using the same size, the tooling block will be held up perfectly. <p>Hey guys! Christopher Smith here, Service Technician with LeBlond. We&#8217;re going to talk to you today a little bit about our gearhead lathes, and our variable speed lathes, and some of the differences and the pros and the cons.</p>
<p>As you can see, this movement speed dial I can quickly change the speed. Which makes it nice to do on the fly when you&#8217;re working with your part and you can find that sweet spot on that speed there to achieve the good quality finish that you&#8217;re after.</p>
<p>What else is nice about this machine, so with the control drive on it, and what you would see with a new LeBlond quote from us, is we offer the Newall Digital Readout systems. You can get the E70 CSS Constant Surface Speed unit. Now, what that does is it has another computer system that talks with the drive that you would set a program. So, as you&#8217;re cutting and your diameter&#8217;s getting smaller on your part, and you need a certain speed to keep achieving that finish. The machine, if you program, it will speed up to keep the speed going to give you that Constant Service Speed to get your good quality finished. Now, also, if you didn&#8217;t want to get that technical. We also have the Newall DP700, just your standard unit X and Y axes. There is some program in it, not as technical as the E70 unit, for programs of some of your tooling and some other small programs that you can do as well.</p>
<p>A few of the downsides, cons to it, is you can see here, there&#8217;s only two speed ranges. You got your low end and your high end. So you do lose a little bit of cutting torque. But what you do get is you get the 2,500, you get more RPMs out of this than you would with the gearhead system. Commonly, that what I do see a lot though, is just shifting between the gears right now, they&#8217;re lined up pretty well. But the biggest thing as an operator, what you want to do is give this a little bit of spin while you&#8217;re changing gears so it flows nicely. Cause what&#8217;s going to happen is you just have that high and low gear, and they&#8217;re going to wind up hitting with the gear on the spindle itself. And you could cause a nick, you get that nick on there, and then you&#8217;re just going to have a constant tick, tick, tick, while you&#8217;re running.</p>
<p>And if you&#8217;re running a high speed, it can be super loud it sounds like the machine is blowing up. That is not the case. All it is just a little nick on the gear, take the head, cover off, find that spot on the gear, pile it up, some memory cloth or a diamond file, something nice and smooth, smooth it up and you&#8217;re good to go again. Go over here to the gearhead.</p>
<p>Now the gearhead, to me, it&#8217;s like the workhorse. So with the extra gears that you have inside of it, it gives you a bit of heavier cutting torque. Now you do lose some RPMs. You get only 2000 RPM out of it. And also with it to change speeds, you&#8217;ve got to stop the machine and you can only go through any of these speeds, you can&#8217;t just fine tune it. So try and maybe find that that finish might be a little bit tougher, but not that bad at all. Great cutting machine.</p>
<p>The DP700 is the unit you would get with it as well. It doesn&#8217;t have the drive system talk and with the variable speed and all that. So just your standard DP700 unit would come with it. With the better cutting torque going through the gears, you do still have the same high and low gear inside the head stock as you do with the EVS. But just a basic good cut and lay. So I&#8217;ve got a couple lathes over here with the headstock cover off, so we can look inside and you can see what I&#8217;m talking about with some of these gear systems. And we&#8217;ll go over a couple other things, just come with me over this way.</p>
<p>Right now, looking at the variable speed lay. Then the first thing you would have to do is remove the control box out of the way, just to screw on the side. And the first thing you notice once you take the cover off is this big manifold up here. So as soon as you turn the machine on, you&#8217;ll hear the hydraulic pump running and what that&#8217;s going to do, that&#8217;s going to be constantly feeding lubrication oil all through here, the hydraulic oil, keeping your gears in all the bearings inside the headstock, all nice and lubricated and, and great working order. Now, like I said, with worrying about knocking the gears right there, you can see that it&#8217;s not lined up. So if you were to slam that real hard, you&#8217;re going to put a nick on that gear, if you slam it hard enough. So what you want to do, just move your faceplate or chuck to it up.</p>
<p>But if you do slam it and you do start hearing that head knocking sound, take the head cover off, put it in a neutral position and spin the shafts around, look for that spot and it&#8217;ll show up. You&#8217;ll see it. It&#8217;ll be completely discolored or you&#8217;ll even see a deep groove cut into the gear, sometimes I&#8217;ve seen that. And you&#8217;re just going to want to clean those up, put it all back together and go about your day. All right, let&#8217;s go over to the gear head and take a look at it. So with your gear head, you can see it doesn&#8217;t have that manifold system. What you have here is this plate on top, it&#8217;s kind of like the trough, the oil trough. And what that&#8217;s going to do when the machine is running. This is going to give what we call a splash bath. It&#8217;s going to be throwing, slinging oil all over the place, which is going to fill this trough up. And it&#8217;s going to disperse out through these hoses onto the bearings, keeping everything well, lubricated. Plus, once thing&#8217;s running, it&#8217;s going to be raining down the oil.</p>
<p>Now what you&#8217;ll also notice is this magnet on here. And what that does, so over years of running, there&#8217;s going to be some wear and tear on the gears, and there&#8217;s going to be some metal dust inside oil. So what this will do, this will help catch some of that. So it&#8217;s not raining down and going into being fed into your bearings, which is to get prolong the life of your bearings. So we would remove the two bolts, move that out of the way. And like I said, you still have that same high and low gear that you got to be cautious about, slamming and knocking. Same with your speed gears over here. You&#8217;re going to hit the jog button, jog it a little bit and get it moving. Move it around, get everything lined up nice and perfect so everything meshes real well.</p>
<p>Now with this gear cluster, what it does, it helps out with this shaft and giving you more torque, I should say just it gives you more torque so you can take heavier bolt cuts If you&#8217;d like. Now also a little bit on maintenance. If you&#8217;re running the lathe every single day, and this goes for lathes. We recommend you change the oil every three months. And on top of that, don&#8217;t just change the oil, remove the head cover, take a look inside and see if you&#8217;re getting some metal dust inside there that&#8217;s get a pile up in a corner. And you want to get that good and clean wiped out. But what we also have, what you&#8217;ll also see down the bottom, we also have a magnet down inside at the bottom as well. That&#8217;ll help, catch some of that so it&#8217;s not getting slung up and getting into the bearings, just to prolong the life of the bearings as well.</p>
<p>Another thing to look for, once a year, check your spindle nut. Over time, things can loosen up so you want to check that. That needs to be torque down at 75 foot pounds of torque to keep everything good and locked tight. And a great way to check that is, put a test piece in your Chuck, or if you&#8217;ve got a test piece that can go into  the spindle, a good test bar, that&#8217;s the best way to do it. Put an indicator on there and see if you have any play. And if so, go ahead and tighten up the spindle nut a bit.</p>
<p>Another good rule of thumb to check, is check your level once a year. Keep everything, get you the best quality finished that the machine can give you. And you&#8217;ll have a happy operator.</p>
